SHIFT: Shepherd Manyika

Artist and educator Shepherd Manyika discusses the relationship between his roles as artist, university tutor and working in arts outreach, and the thoughts that arise for him when working with others, including collaboration, orientations and site.

In this film, Manyika considers his multiple roles and the relationship between them: artist, university tutor, and his experience working in arts outreach.

He sees his work as offering opportunities for reorientation and rethinking, especially in regard to expanding sites for art-making, such as classrooms, workshops and studios, in terms of access and representation. He also asks how these sites can be modified, and how space can be made for many different kinds of learning and art experiences.

About the artist

Shepherd Manyika is a London-based artist-educator whose works take on multiple formats and mediums. He is interested in memory, place, space, and repair as restoration. Themes of workshops, play, music and sound are used to create transformative art spaces from within and outside the institution.
