Why Artists Should Teach

A conversation on the relationship between teaching and artistic practice with Joseph Cartwright, Jenny Eden and Shepherd Manyika, chaired by Raksha Patel.

'Why Artists Should Teach' brings together artists working across the field of education in conversation around the relationship between educational and artistic practices, and how each informs the other.

Discussing their experiences as teachers and artists, Joseph Cartwright, Jenny Eden, Shepherd Manyika, and Raksha Patel elaborate on the influence of their teaching practice on their artistic practice, and vice versa, in a far-reaching investigation into idea of 'teaching as an artistic practice'.

About the talk

This talk took place on 22 February 2023 at Freelands Foundation in London. It was programmed to accompany 'Cuckoo', an exhibition of works by the three artists participating in the second Freelands Painting Fellowship: Zac Bradley, Alex Crocker, and Daniel Pettitt.

Contributors: Joseph Cartwright (artist and teacher); Jenny Eden (artist and Senior Lecturer, Manchester School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University) and Shepherd Manyika (artist-educator). Moderated by Raksha Patel (artist, writer, socially engaged practitioner and lecturer, Interim Course Leader on BA Painting, Camberwell College of Arts).

'Why Artists Should Teach' is part of Freelands Foundation's ongoing research into the idea of teaching as an artistic practice.
