Summary

In April 2017 the Freelands Foundation held a three-day event at Tate Exchange, in collaboration with artist teachers studying at UCL/Institute of Education (UCL/IOE). Titled OCCUPATION, it included daily panel discussions featuring a range of speakers responding to the question: ‘What is an Art Teacher?’ Each day we distributed a different copy of ISSUE, a newspaper featuring essays, artworks and commentary from those who were part of OCCUPATION. Each edition focuses on the different areas of interest that developed out of the project: ISSUE 1 explores ideas about education spaces and features an opening essay by Henry Ward (Creative Director, Freelands Foundation); ISSUE 2 is introduced by Thomas Jones (lecturer at UCL/IOE) writing about the challenges that await emerging art teachers; and ISSUE 3 includes a text by Andy Ash (lecturer at UCL/IOE) investigating how to go about making in the face of uncertainty.
