The exhibition Brink was the culmination of the joint project between Freelands Foundation and UCL/Institute of Education PGCE students who are studying to become teachers of Art & Design. This accompanying publication features additional work and essays, including a list of topics that that the artist teachers feel students should cover in art in schools. The list was inspired by one originally compiled by the French pedagogue, Célestin Freinet, in the 1950s. In seeking an alternative approach to education, Freinet had asked parents to answer the question of what was most important for their children to learn. The responses ranged from a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of French politics and revolution, to being able to mend a punctured bicycle tyre or cook a meal for a family of four. The Brink publication contains 99 possibilities that answer the question: ‘What should students have learned in art by the end of secondary school?’ It concludes with a comprehensive index and a glossary of words that relate to art education and practice, which are compiled from the contents of the book itself. Artists include Kirsten Adams, Amy Brocklesby, Chantelle Callaghan, Cordelia Cembrowicz, William Coma, Menna Cominetti, Ruth Elliott, Victoria England, Katy English, Vanessa Goulding, Francois Grobler, Shajeda Hasnat, Alice Havers, Jack Hopkins, Holly Howarth, Sophie Killingback, Nicole Marks, Susanna McAlpine, Victoria McGillicuddy, Alice McVicker, Anna Miele, Freya Morter, Hannah Oram, Justin Rang, Eli Samuels, Rachael Smith, Jenni Snowden, Alfonzina Tuttolomondo, Jon-Paul Winter, Amber Winterbotham, Jayem Won, Chloe Wyatt.
