SHIFT: Laura Wilson

Laura Wilson discusses the fluidity of developing her artistic practice through collaboration with everyday processes and people, from bakers and archaeologists, to choreographers and bricklayers.

In this film, artist Laura Wilson draws on her practice as a sculptural artist from Northern Ireland.

She works with specialists in their craft, including bakers, archaeologists, dancers, scientists, bricklayers and chefs, to develop societally reflective, collaborative sculptural and performance works, and occasional moving image, that amplify the relationship between materiality, memory and tacit knowledge.

Relishing the process of bringing together different collaborators, and returning to those through independent and commissioned works to build a robust practice rooted in reflection, at times working within other industries for a time to understand the process, Laura draws on key works including Fold and Stretch (2016), a performance developed with baker Martha Brown and choreographer Lucy Suggate; the evolving artwork Trained on Veda (2016), which connects bakeries and galleries through a dark brown malted loaf bread from Northern Ireland called Veda bread; and Old Salt (2021) developed with the archeologist Rom Lane and volunteers working across Lincolnshire Country Councils Heritage Service volunteer community and with Mansions of the Future.
