SHIFT: Jose Campos and Oliver Herbert

Artist teachers Jose Campos and Oliver Herbert discuss their teaching practices during lockdown; re-igniting experimentation while taking stock of 'the new normal' through using everyday materials in their remote lessons.

In this film, artist teachers Jose Campos and Oliver Herbert discuss their Unknown Learning project, as they walk their dog Frida on the beach.

While recollecting their experiences of teaching in lockdown, the pair discuss the effects the year has had on their teaching practice, in consideration of the 'new normal' classroom dynamics and the experimentation it could ignite into future teaching.

We were interested in the moment of lockdown, and the experience of teaching remotely. We had to devise lessons where we were using materials inside the house, thinking about how our students were going to be able to produce work without the materials and the conventions of the classroom. And we found that really liberating. And we found it as a sort of positive opportunity.
