In this lecture, artist and educator Ian Hartshorne makes an argument for a return to the historical principles that have defined painting’s practice and evaluation.
Contending that discussions of painting have become diluted by an overbearance of discourses related to plurality, polyvocality and subjectivity, Hartshorne argues for a return to the principles that have been key to the development of painting over centuries.
Only this way, says Hartshorne, can painting be discussed as its own discipline, and one that is material, human and real.
