Spotlight: Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Wolverhampton Art Gallery has been at the heart of the region’s cultural life for over 140 years. The gallery is recognised as a leader in contemporary arts and accessibility, delivering an ambitious and innovative programme of exhibitions, supporting emerging artists, and welcoming a young, culturally diverse audience through pioneering work with underrepresented communities. Home to the largest collection of Pop Art outside London and one of the UK’s most significant collections of work by Black British artists, the gallery connects world-class art and creativity with its community.

Wolverhampton Art Gallery Youth Programme supports young people aged 14-30 through an accessible, co-created and needs-based approach to arts education that is relevant to young people in Wolverhampton and the wider region. Including long running projects, partnership working and strong links with the education sector, the programme is designed around layered opportunities for young creatives, building a thriving, inclusive arts ecosystem.

The Freelands Awards champion and celebrate UK visual art organisations’ commitment to art education.

Launched in 2026, every year, three winning organisations will each receive £100,000 for a recent or ongoing project demonstrating commitment to progressive art education approaches with a demonstrable impact. 

Across the last decade of working in art education, Freelands Foundation has seen visual art organisations, such as galleries and museums, as spaces for inspiring progressive art education offerings for all. Despite the increasing pressures they face, these organisations continue as sites for teaching and learning. Many embrace art education practices that are as diverse as the communities they work with.

The Freelands Awards are an opportunity to widely recognise, support and share inspiring art education work that may not always find the spotlight. Over the next five years, Freelands Foundation will commit £1.5 million for the Awards as a central part of its mission to champion art education.
