'Art teachers should have the space to be rebellious' was an intimate action-research project and collaboration between Joanna Brinton (artist and founder of Good Studio) and Freya Kehoe (artist and Head of Art at Haverstock School in Chalk Farm), held between 2023 and 2024.
Brinton and Kehoe initiated this project as an invitation to consider the boundaries, motivations and possibilities for rebellion and creativity in the space between artistic and teaching practice.
Beginning in November 2023, the pair met regularly to explore this idea through conversation, exchange and interventions in the school environment, before taking up a two-month joint residency at Freelands Foundation in 2024, which allowed them to further their thinking and making in a dedicated space to practice.
Additionally, Brinton and Kehoe facilitated an ARTISTEACHER workshop, an Art Education Reading Group, and produced pamphlets and workshop guides that offer provocations based on their explorations of the relationship between artistic practice and teaching.
