The Studio as a Site of Community and Collective Action

A conversation on the potential for studio spaces to contribute to a diverse and inclusive art world with Dr Charlotte Bonham-Carter, Dyana Gravina, Jane Morrow, and Rosalind Nashashibi.

For many artists, the studio is the essential site of artistic production. And yet, in the UK, these spaces are under-funded and under-recognised, contributing to a precarity and inequality within the sector.

'The Studio as a Site of Community and Collective Action' brings together Dr. Charlotte Bonham-Carter, Dyana Gravina, Jane Morrow, and Rosalind Nashashibi to examine the importance of the studio both in supporting practice and as an enabler of community and collective action.

In particular, the conversation probes the accessibility of studio spaces, considering the role they might play in contributing to a diverse and inclusive art world.

About the talk

This talk took place on 7 December 2022 at Freelands Foundation in London. It was programmed alongside the 2021/2022 report of the Foundation’s research commission 'The Representation of Women Artists in the UK (2015–2021)'.

Contributors: Dr. Charlotte Bonham-Carter (curator, writer, researcher, and Head of International Partnerships at Chelsea, Camberwell and Wimbledon Colleges), Dyana Gravina (curator, birth doula, activist, and performance artist), Jane Morrow (curator, writer, and researcher) and Rosalind Nashashibi (filmmaker and painter).

'The Studio as a Site of Community and Collective Action' is part of Freelands Foundation's ongoing research into the studio as a site for artist development and learning.
