Borrowing the words of Julian Barnes, Henry Ward describes the act of painting as “trying to hold a course in an open-steer contrary tide.”
In this talk, he discusses the journey of painting as a processual encounter with the work being made, a process that is defined by the painting as it comes into being. He also explores the different places where his paintings are made – the studio, the shed – and the ways in which different sites encourage different modes of engagement with the act of painting.
