"a kind of casual conversation can lead into a lot of personal discussion. And once you start getting to know those young people then you can start finding roots to get them to explore ideas about what is actually happening in their lives or things that they really care about as a really good starting point for them to make work..."
In this film, artist teachers Elle Andrews and Dianne Minnicucci discuss the role of photography within the classroom, reflecting on the varied approaches they adopt while working with young people. They explore how they have used photography as an accessible tool for engaging often underrepresented students, to encourage their participation on their own terms, a more personal relation to the subject matter, and an excavation of broader themes through dialogue; developing new methods for communicating and teaching photography in secondary school while growing young peoples confidence.
