Adebola Oyekanmi

Adebola Oyekanmi is a musician and sound design artist. His work combines samples, field recordings and the human voice to create soundscapes that tell stories of the diaspora - those that exist at the intersection of liminal existences we experience within predominantly white spaces.

Oyekanmi’s sound takes inspiration from the tales and rhythms of his Yoruba heritage and the horn of jazz pioneer John Coltrane. It is rooted in classical saxophone and the music theory of Dr. Yusef Lateef.

Central to Oyekanmi’s practice is exploration and experimentation, paired with an understanding of the past, present and future as inextricable and necessarily contingent upon each other. His work engages in an Afrofuturist discourse on learning and unlearning, investigating the unfamiliar through nature, sound and space.
